Your Name – Michael Waddell
Your role at Foothills – Lead Teacher/Teaching Pastor
Tell us about your family – I’m married to Katie and together we have 3 awesome kids, Gabriel (8), Mia (6), Levi (2), and a rambunctious black lab named Frisco
When and how did you become a Christ-follower?
I am a preacher’s kid, so I’ve always known about God, but it wasn’t until college that God revealed Himself to me in a way that I knew Him in a personal way.
What do you enjoy about your role?
I love to teach and deliver key truths that not only paint a picture of how great God is but are also applicable for today.
What’s your background?
That’s a loaded question J God has allowed me to serve in some pretty interesting roles over the last 15 years. I am bi-vocational, which means that I work a full time job outside of the church. After college and during seminary I served as a youth pastor for 3 years while also serving in the Marine Corps Reserves. I then served as Director of Church Relations for an international missions organization for 3 years, after that Katie and I moved to San Francisco to work with friends in a start up business and I served as the English pastor for the First Chinese Southern Baptist Church of SF. After having our first child we felt that God was calling us back to Martinsville where we owned a coffee shop, started a young adult ministry called the Table, and served as the Director of Development for a local non-profit. Today, in addition to my role as Lead Teacher at Foothills, I am the Director of Development for Carlisle School, right here in Martinsville.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I am an avid outdoorsman; I hunt, fish, and hike. I play as much golf as possible and I also coach boys and girls varsity tennis for Carlisle. If there is something to do outdoors, I’ll do it!
What music do you listen to?
Whitey Ford, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, any of the old stuff. I also dig Americana and New Grass Revival stuff, like Yarn, Holy Ghost Tent Revival, or Sam Bush.
I love Andrew Murray and Watchman Nee. Everyone should read the Satisfying Life by Bud McCord.
Favorite Scripture – John 15
What should we know about you? I desire to make disciples and make leaders. I am a dot connector, I love helping people connect the dots between their passions and their action
